Low-power Wide-Area Networking includes systems like LoRa, Zigbee, XBee, and various IEEE 802.15.4-derived LR-WPAN protocols. They are designed to be less costly to consume less power than alternatives such as Bluetooth or WiFi, sacrificing bandwidth. Some can transmit over distance (LoRa can be used over kilometers under optimal conditions), whereas others build in the concept of mesh networking. Most operate within the ISM bands.
