Ward) The Smithsonian Institute's Secretary, I. Michael Heyman, announced that the Enola Gay will be displayed without commentary or moral assements. The Smithsonian's Board of Regents decided to replace "The Last Act: The Atomic Bomb and the End of World War II (the Enola Gay exhibition) with new exhibit (including the B-29) that would "would honor and commemorate their [the veterans of WWII] valor sacrifice." For the original display, the Smithsonian included moral assesments and contextual explanations on the bombing that had been submitted to the current mayor of Hiroshima for approval. American veteran's groups took offense only after it was revealed that the original exhibit's estimate of American casualties that would have resulted from an invasion of Japan was not consistent with the source document on which the estimate was based. Also, Heyman announced that no decision would be made in the heat of the moment with regard to the demand made by a number of members of Congress that Air and Space Museum Director Martin Harwit be "immediately terminated or resign."
